Season ends on a high at the Albert Club

Just a few words to lay the season to rest.

The end of season social/trophy presentation evening duly took place at the Albert Club and a good time was had by all.  For pictures of the happy event (courtesy of Andrew Simcock) click here.

During the course of the evening we had some fairly informal consultations about the format and modus operandi of the quiz as it's  been for the last few years.  There has been no great groundswell for change but it's no bad thing to check the mood now and again.

The most important idea mooted was a change of weekly quiz evening from Wednesday to either Tuesday or Thursday.  After conducting some straw polls amongst those assembled at the Albert Club Tuesday was ruled out.  Thursday and Wednesday however polled equal numbers.  This being the case we will continue to use Wednesday evening but recognise that Thursday may become the preferred evening before long.  Even with Wednesday as the official evening teams may, on an ad hoc basis, care to rearrange their games to the following evening if they both prefer Thursday.

Other changes agreed for next year:

  • Question setting duties will be arranged so that the team setting each week in the second half of the season is not the same team as set for the equivalent set of fixtures in the first half of the season - so, for instance, if Griffing Braggarts set when Snoopy's play Opsimaths in the first half of the season, then the 'sit out' team paired with the Braggarts (rather than the Braggarts) will set for Snoopy's against Opsimaths in the second half

  • Wherever possible (i.e. when you remember to tell me) the website will carry the actual match scores not just the results - I will put these on the fixtures page as I've done over the past few weeks for the Cup and Plate results

  • Team name changes submitted for next year:

    o     SWMCC become Stumped

o     Dr O'Neil become Ethel Rodin

o     Griffing Braggarts become Fifth Finger

  • Possible venue change for Ethel Rodin from the Red Lion to the White Swan in Ladybarn - but this is yet to be confirmed

And finally I have been in touch with other quiz websites:

which publishes results, quiz papers etc for the weekly quiz at The Pear Tree pub in Hadfield

and

both of which are managed by a chap called Chris Mills and contain question papers used in quiz evenings at the Ancient Oak pub, Cottam, Preston

I mention these sites here because they have a large fund of past quiz papers which some of you may wish to plagiarise when on question-setting duty next season.  I have glanced at the papers and they look pretty useful to me.

Have a good summer.
