Results & Match Reports

This weeks results:

  • Snoopy's Friends moved up to fourth in the table with a victory over Ethel Rodin

  • Albert secured only their second victory of the campaign winning away against X-Pats

  • History Men slipped up for a second week in a row losing at home to top team St Caths

  • Fifth Finger (without Kieran) were ably led by Barry, who was under strict instructions to text Kieran the result, and he didn't disappoint with the message 'Ops stffd - dnt cum bak - baz'

  • Brains of Oak went down to table-climbers Stumped - who have the strange record of having won every one of their away games this season and lost all their home efforts!

Quiz Paper Verdict

We have had some excellent papers since we started back in October but the comments received for Albert Park's effort last night puts them top of the pile.  Here's some of the feedback:

From the bench at Snoopy's (worth a few months off your next driving ban, Mark?):

"No moans about the balance, or about questions so hard that no-one can answer them.  A jolly good quiz and a credit to the setter(s). The Union Jack City was a good question that none of us could answer.  Similar kinds of questions could be set about Washington DC and Karlsruhe."

and from Keeper Copland:

"That's better.  We enjoyed that one.  Beginning of our winning run.  Just one minor discussion occurred: if the question had asked about insect stages, the answer would be ovum/larva/pupa/imago but for butterflies, it's ovum or egg/caterpillar/chrysalis/imago or adult."

and from David at St Caths:

"This quiz was judged by both sides to be excellent."

A few personal observations on this excellent paper:

  • Where, oh where, was Carole Vorderman in Round 2?

  • Would the world have been a better place if (as my computer scanner suggested - Round 4 Q1) Hitler had been a Furrier?

  • And what an excellent adjunct to the answer in Round 4 Q8 about the portrait of the Duke of Monmouth - often these extra bits of info. in the answer are there to tell you how much the questioner knows, but here we got something genuinely amusing

All adding up to a big thank you to the Albert Park.  Finally to underline the comments above the stats for the week were as follows:  Average aggregate score for the 5 matches of 73.2 (the second highest yet this season), with actual aggregates varying from 70 (X-Pats/Albert) to 77 (History Men/St Caths).

The Question of the Week

Down at the Griffin our vote for 'Question of the Week' went to (Round 3 Q5):

Which soup has a calf's head as its main ingredient?

Chastterbox

I was asked whether I could archive the week's 'Quiz Biz' article on the site so that, if required, one could go back over (for instance) past missives from the Rev. Megson (heaven forbid).  Ever willing to please, I have transferred all the articles I have kept onto the site this week.  You can get at them by going to the week's quiz paper via the fixtures page, and from there following the 'Quiz Biz' link.  Try it!

No word from the bogs yet this week - perhaps Gerry's still stumped!!
