End of Season Gala Evening

Another season was duly put to bed with a grand celebration at the Albert Club.

An excellent quiz from Pigs,  Gerry and Andrew, was punctuated with the usual recollections of the season by yours truly, and prize-giving courtesy of our media superstar, Dave Rainford.  Albert Park won the evening's quiz whilst Fifth Finger won pretty well everything else.  So, mindful that quizzes are not just about winning the matches, Withquiz made a few extra nominations for the honours:

Best Setters:

     Electric Pigs

Question of the Season::

Electric Pigs     (the Fanny Adams question)

For services to Poetry:

Roisin Graven  (for the answer that launched a thousand Limericks)

For media superstardom:

Dave Rainford  (for his WWTBAM win)

& the Withquiz Eggheads (with a big boo for the BBC)

and if you want to see for yourselves click here for pictures of the event.

See you all in October - WithQuiz is now on holiday!!

JOHN TURRELL

A really sad bit of news with which to suffix such a grand season....

Brian McClintock has just informed me that John Turrell died last Sunday (May 26th).

Brian writes:

"John had had an atypical microcondrial viral infection for several years and then last week developed a secondary lung infection, which did for him."

John was a founder member of the Withington Quiz League back in the 1970s (with Barry Whitehead and others - including Gerry Hennessy, I think) and will be known to many of you in that capacity.  He was also more widely known as the last person to make the Withington Reporter worth reading through his weekly 'Mild & Bitter' column.  I particularly remember his article one week describing Russ Belshaw (also of blessed memory) cycling back home drunk from Didsbury to Chorlton.  Many used to say - a tad ironically - that John's weekly column was the only thing that made the Reporter worth the price.

I'm not sure if John and his team don't still hold the all-time Withquiz record for lowest score of a Wednesday evening (I think this was when he was captain of the illustrious Crown 'C' team).

Anyway God rest his soul and best wishes to Val.
