Results & Match Reports

St. Caths lost to X-Pats in a fairly one-sided match at St Catherine's Club.  John comments:

Excellent quiz - good balance of topics with a lot of tippy-tonguers and others able to be worked out.

Kieran's round 8 seemed a bit out of place and last minute - who cares about the inside leg measurement of Welsh Newsreaders?

Opsimaths, yet to win a match, predictably, lost to table-topping and unbeaten FCEK - but actually the scores were pretty close throughout - as Gerry (sorry Fr M) said afterwards "In this league with a fair wind anyone can beat anyone else"

Ethel Rodin beat Snoopy's Friends.  Roz sums up the evening at the Swan:

What an extraordinary paper!  The first three rounds were fairly equal between the two sides.  Rounds 5 to 8, however, favoured the team which answered first.  In all there were 19 unanswered questions which was a few too many for our liking.

We agreed that there were two questions that should have been buried before they were asked: "Cameroon, Scotland and Senegal being the 3 last what?" and "How old is Huw Edwards?"

We did enjoy the alliteration round, but decided that the most interesting question of the week was the one about the double-landlocked countries.

The overall feeling was not a bad paper, but, Fifth Finger, don't quibble when other teams set some obscure questions!!

History Men just overcame the Electric Pigs in a close match at the Red.  Ivor writes:

Hardest quiz of the year so far with 19 zero questions of which the Pigs (having won the toss and batted first) got no less than 13.  Some interesting questions but a controversy regarding the Father of the House.  Perhaps the last few questions, when things were close and there were zeros all round, was a bit anticlimactic (aren’t we quizzers difficult to please?).  Our QM was Tim, safely returned from Syria, and in extreme Paxman mode, displaying  his contempt for perceived cretinous answers especially if uttered from his own team (ED: Does he know Jitka?).

Albert notched up their first victory of the season in most impressive style with a home win over Albert Park.

Quiz Paper Verdict

This week it was the turn of Fifth Finger.  For the Fingers the paper seemed uncharacteristically variable.  Some crackers - but some stinkers (who really cares or knows how old Huw Edward is?).  My suspicion is that the compilation of the paper was a little hurried and lacked the usual heavy hand of an editor.  On a more positive note I really liked the 'double land-locked' question (see below) and can envisage some fertile minds devising a whole host of similar questions in weeks to come.  By the way did whoever set that one go through the complete atlas to establish the answer or was the question cribbed?

The Question of the Week

My vote this week goes to (Round 3 Q1):

Only two countries in the world can be described as ‘double landlocked’, that is, surrounded entirely by countries that are themselves landlocked.  Name either.
