Results & Match Reports

Electric Pigs lost to FCEK who retain their narrow lead at the top of the table  (although the Dogs still have a game in hand on them).

Ethel Rodin lost to X-Pats.

Mad Dogs beat History Men and thus saw off one of their key challenges in the run in.

St Caths lost to Snoopy's Friends.

Opsimaths beat a depleted 3-person Albert notching up the highest team score of the evening.

Quiz Paper Verdict

This week the paper came from Albert Park.  Again some excellent feedback.

Andrew from the Pigs:

"Best quiz of the season so far"

Kieran from the Dogs:

"Very good quiz we thought - inventive - interesting.  Liked the paired picture first round"

John from X-Pats (not quite so ecstatic):

"Excellent well constructed 1st round of pictures.  Cluedo round a bit weak - only 18 answers to select from.  Nice imperial measures round too.  Finally, a bit of over reliance on actors/actresses quessies."

Although we failed to spot it in the Albert/Opsimaths match, it seems most of you saw the self-referential flavour in the answers to the spares and thus were baffled by the answer to Question 9.  How is Vancouver related to Withquiz personnel, Richard?

The Question of the Week

Kieran gets to select this week's gong, and - based only only the mellifluous sound of its answer - he goes for Round 7 Q6:

In chemistry what's the process called where solids become liquids by absorbing moisture from the air, as some salts do?

Legal Challenge Underneath the Arches

Despite the praise for last week's quiz I suspect Tony is getting fed up with us nitpicking the Snoopy papers.  Well this time the challenge comes from out in cyberspace.  I received the following email last week from a Colin Shaw (email address available on request):

"I regularly and enjoyably trawl through your quizzes, being a 'quiz nut' myself.  I spotted an error in the paper set on 22/02/06 by 'Snoopy's Friends' and thought I'd pass it on.  Question 8 in Round 6 states that a certain actor played a death row inmate in Carlito's Way opposite Susan Sarandon.  The answer given was Sean Penn.  This is incorrect.  Whilst Penn did appear in Carlito's Way (De Niro starred), the film in which he played a man on death row opposite Susan Sarandon was in fact the 1995 Tim Robbins movie, Dead Man Walking in which he portrayed real-life killer Matthew Poncelot opposite Sarandon's character, Sister Mary Prejean.  I hope you don't mind me bringing this to your attention."

Not at all, Colin.  Thanks for your contribution.  I'd just keep away from Manchester Crown Court for a while.

Stockport Quiz League

And another input from someone who has found us on the Web, came via the Message Board - but bears repeating here.  It's from the Webmaster of the Stockport league.  He/she writes:

"Greetings from the Stockport Quiz League.

We're quite a friendly bunch and always on the lookout for new teams if you're at a loose end on Thursday evenings between September and April. You may even recognise some familiar faces who've played in your league in years gone by.  Our website
(
Stockport Quiz League) tells you everything about us and has loads of questions you can download for practice (or plagiarism)."

I've had a glance through the website.  There's some pretty useful question papers - all set by the teams themselves.  All in all it looks like a league that runs itself in much the same way as we do - with perhaps just a tad more formality.  Have a look yourselves via the link above.
