Val Draper Cup - Round 2 & Plate Round 1

In the Cup, Ethel Rodin managed the impossible by beating the holders, the Dogs, and consigning them to the ignominy of the Plate.  Roz writes....

Ethel Rodin has done it again!  She beat Fifth Finger/Mad Dogs 36-34.  OK, they only had 3 in the team - Martin and Barry were away - but we still won!!

It was generally agreed that it was a pretty good paper.  Kieran was caught out by the Bingo question 'Which common herb is known in France as the King of Herbs?'.  This went to Anthony.  "We had this last week, but you weren't here" says Kieran.  As Anthony didn't know the answer, Kieran proudly announced "Basil", only to discover that he was wrong!  He had confused it with last week's question 'Which herb derives its name from the Greek word meaning King?'.

QOTW?  I loved the one about the Royal Navy's nickname.  Does ANYBODY know WHY the Royal Navy was originally known as 'The Andrew'?  One for the message board?

Also in the Cup, Electric Pigs kept up the pace, but ultimately lost the race, at home to FCEK.

And in the other Cup game Albert Park fell at home to the History Men.

Meanwhile in the first round of the Plate, Snoopy's Friends triumphed over St Caths.

Quiz Paper Verdict

This week the paper came from Albert.  'Good solid paper' was the verdict all round.  Many thoughts as to the QotW - which is usually a good sign.  There were favourable mentions for those dealing with the birthplace of Charles Atlas, the historic role of Cornelius the Cockerel, the Marquis of Douro and the less than tasteful advertising slogans used by Shepherd Neame.  On the other hand the 2 astrology questions got a thumbs down as being too obscure.

Oh, and a bit of feedback from last week's Ethel Rodin paper.  A website correspondent has written in to inform us that the Mary Rose was sunk off Portsmouth NOT Plymouth (Round 2 Q8).  Thanks you very much Mr Cobbett.

The Question of the Week

This week the vote (from the History Men) goes to Round 3 Q4:

Which monarch had a son killed by a cricket ball?
