Val Draper Cup - Semi Final & Plate Round 2
In the Cup:
Ethel Rodin and
FCEK fought
out a friendly Cup derby at the Swan with the league runners up,
FCEK, cantering home comfortably. Our correspondent,
Damian, writes....
"A most
convivial evening Chez Swan as is usually the case when we
play a derby match against Madame Ethel and her ladies.
Both teams were quorate and were evenly matched for the
first three rounds after which the FCEKers gradually built
up a lead that was sustained right to the end.
Roisin's decision to go second after winning the toss was
obviously vindicated (mind you we would have beaten her
senseless with one of her Holstein Pils empties if this had
proved not to be the case!).
Madame Ethel
probably jinxed her chances right from the start by
committing the incredible faux pas of OPENING THE
CURTAINS and letting in daylight on a scene that had not
encountered such a phenomenon for at least 45 years.
This immediately attracted the attentions of one of the
establishment's unearthly female residents who promptly
sidled up to Father Megson and drunkenly asked in a loud
voice, "Is THIS the LADIES'?" When assured that it
wasn't, she proceeded to offer us her quiz services before
passing out at the good reverend's feet! This isn't
the first time that our saintly leader's charisma
has attracted the unwelcome attentions of the local female
clientele but, fortunately, the innkeeper arrived in the
nick of time to chase her off with a large clove of garlic
(or maybe it was the offer of another double brandy).
Snoopy's
questions were good, straightforward quiz questions albeit
the pairings were sometimes a little obvious (e.g. it was
fairly easy to predict that a question about the Best
Supporting Male Oscar winner would follow one about the Best
Supporting Female Oscar winner). A query too about the
question asking for first Briton to win a GOLD medal at the
2006 Winter Olympics. Our belief is that Shelley
Rudman (the answer given) won a SILVER medal, and that that
was the only medal won by ANY Briton at those events!
But all in all a most entertaining evening. We look
forward to the finals with eager anticipation."
History
Men slipped
up at home to the Electric Pigs who now move into the
Cup Final on May 17th to play FCEK
....whilst in the Plate:
Mad Dogs were beaten
at Fortress Griffin by
Albert Park and have now lost 2
games in a row (can anyone remember a losing streak of 2 games or more for
the mighty Dogs? Kieran?) Opsimaths just sneaked it by a single point against an Evelyn-weakened 3-person Albert. |
Quiz Paper Verdict |
This week the paper came from Snoopy's Friends. Lots of literature (if you can call the Famous Five literature) - with a few art galleries thrown in for good measure. I can't complain though, because a Scottish island question came my way, and I'll challenge anyone in the league (even Martin) to best me on Scottish islands. It was noticeable that the results were all pretty 'nip and tuck' so there seemed to be plenty of balance in the way the questions fell. Damian's comments above confirm that the paper gave for a good evening's entertainment. Like the Pigs (see below) I particularly liked the question that linked John Lennon, Robin Hood and Ronald Reagan. These sort of quirky inventive questions always pep up the evening for me. |
