End of Season Quiz Evening at the Albert Club

A great way to end the season.  10 of our 11 teams (X-Pats were missing) plus a guest team from the Stockport League (The Alexandra) gathered at the Albert Club last night.  Gerry Hennessy was unable to conjure up his traditional end of season paper so I constructed a special quiz for the assembled masses.  It took the form of the usual Albert Club end of month quiz evening with plenty of sound, pictures and technology (which worked almost glitch-free).  One of the rounds was based on questions selected at random from the website archives for 2001/2.  To view the questions click here.

To make things interesting we handicapped teams based on their league position at the end of the season.  This proved a bit of an own goal since it let in the handicap-free guests from The Alexandra to clean up with an emphatic victory.

As ever a photographer was on hand (thanks, Andrew).  You can see yourselves by clicking here.

The Awards

Damian Land (2FCEKs) as our newest star of the small screen (Damian's soon to appear on Mastermind) took over from Dave 'WWTBAM' Rainford and presented the season's trophies.

Round of the Season went to Brian McClintock (Opsimaths) for his 'Staggering round the pubs of Central Manchester' round from February 7th's paper (click here and go to Round 6 to sample it).

Question of the Season was voted for during the evening and went by a large majority to John Tolan as Guest Setter on March 28th for his question:

"Sir Peter Teazle did it in 1757; Cardinal Beaufort did it in 1505; Captain Cuttle did it in 1922.  It usually takes about 2.5 minutes to accomplish it.  What is it?"

For the answer click here and go to Round 4 Question 5.  (John, Roz has a bottle of wine for you.)

The WithQuiz Plate went to 2FCEKs whilst.....

both the League trophy and the Val Draper Cup were hoisted triumphantly by The Napier Girls.

Cheers all round!!

Agreed changes for next season

The following changes/enhancements to our way of running the League and Cup have been agreed for implementation next season:

  1. When teams play each other in the second half of the league season, the question setters will be different from the those who set in the equivalent match in the first half of the season (Gary Donely, please note)

  2. The Plate competition is exclusively composed of teams who lose in the first round of the Val Draper Cup - no Cup losers in the Plate after the second week of the knockout tournaments (again - Gary Donely, please note)

  3. Where we need to resort to Highest Scoring Losers, Lowest Scoring Losers, Highest Scoring Winners, etc., we should separate teams that score the same number of points by giving precedence to the team with the most 2 point scores, and then, if this does not separate teams with equal scores, look for the team that lost/won by the highest margin

  4. Drawn Cup/Plate matches should be settled by using the Spares to each team in turn with each spare conferred - and then by a "nearest the Bull's Eye" question such as "How many people were killed in the Napier earthquake of the 1930s?" - nearest to the correct answer wins (setters please note and supply such a question for each Cup/Plate paper hereon)

  5. Substitutes should be allowed at half time (thus enabling new players to be blooded)

  6. If the home team is short of a Question Master then the setters should be approached (as often happens now anyway)

Getting together with the Stockport League

During the evening I was able to discuss ideas for some inter league quizzing since the Stockport League organiser, Mike Wagstaffe, was present as a member of the victorious Alexandra team.  Our conclusions were:

  1. We will organise a Pre-season friendly on Wednesday September 12th or Thursday September 13th between 2 teams representing our 2 leagues (perhaps 6-a-side).  Venue will probably be the Heaton Sports Club.  Format to be sorted out - but maybe a first half in the Stockport style and a second half in the WithQuiz style.

  2. We will explore the possibility of holding a South Manchester Champions knockout competition between the top 4 teams of the 2 leagues (based on 2006/7 end of season league positions).  We could use the weeks both leagues normally leave blank over Christmas and Easter to hold Quarter- and Semi-Finals and then have a Grand Final at the end of the 2007/8 season (say, some time in May 2008).  This seems an excellent idea to me.  Again quiz paper format, venues, etc. can be decided in due course.

  3. Further out as a possibility is a Joint Cup competition between the 21 Stockport League teams and the 11 WithQuiz league teams.

Do use the Message Board to express views about these ideas.  I will go ahead with Mike W and set about arranging the pre-season friendly unless I hear to the contrary.

So that's it for now.  The website will now retreat for a period of aestivation.  I will reactivate early in September and flag up the Pre-season Friendly arrangements.

Meanwhile if you fancy an occasional quiz dabble come along to the Albert Club monthly quizzes running throughout the summer (last Monday of the month) and see if you can stop the History Men winning every time!!
