In the inaugural round of the WIST Champions Cup the Girls and the Charabancs carry the WithQuiz banner forward whilst the History Men and the Opsimaths get eliminated

The Results

Chunky (as befits their record as winners of the Stockport League for the past 11 years) crushed the Opsimaths at the Pineapple 'underneath the arches'

Alexandra just edged it against the History Men (largely as a result of superior knowledge on the pictures) - Ivor writes:

"Remarkably close game with the four sections going 23-23, 10-6, 19-19 and 7-7.  It was the pictures which sank us.

The question balance went awry in our match with both questions of a pair going to the same team - but I don’t think it made any difference.

Nevertheless both sides agreed the questions were very enjoyable (and probably more enjoyable than a turducken).  And on the subject of food, a very enjoyable post quiz buffet!"

Charabancs of Fire ran up a comfortable victory over Traveller's Call at the dreaded Stadium of Murk - Damian writes:

"A most interesting evening in which our own questions just seemed to appeal nicely.  By the end of the 1st half, we were 14 points ahead and we finished 20 points in front!  We did offer to let the Travellers go first in the 2nd half, as is the custom in WithQuiz, but they insisted that the Stockport custom of 'whoever wins the toss, makes their choice for the entire quiz' should prevail so who we were to argue?  The consensus seemed to be that there wouldn't have been much difference to the outcome either way.  It was also one of the fastest quizzes we've ever played as proceedings were wrapped up by about 10.00pm!

We greatly enjoyed Albert Park's questions (well I guess we would say that wouldn't we?) but apart from some misgivings from the Travellers about the pairings in the 1st half, (which we sort of concurred with as they seemed to fall for all the questions about the football stadiums), everyone felt that it was fair and enjoyable.  The picture round in the 1st half went down a treat and I would nominate that as 'Round of the Night'!

Well done Albert Park for an enjoyable and (for us) unusually successful evening.  I can't recall when we last had a result like that.  I daresay it was back in the days when we still had 'a certain woman' running the country!  Oh happy and not so happy days!"

Napier Girls clocked up a convincing home victory against Tiviot

After intensive late night negotiations with the Stockport league it has been agreed that in the semis (at Easter) the top seeds from the 2 leagues (Chunky and the Napier Girls) will avoid playing each other.  The fixtures page has been diddled accordingly - Chunky will play the Charabancs and the Girls will play the Alexandra.

The Paper

Albert Park set this week.  A new experience setting to the Stockport format - and by general consent they acquitted themselves admirably (see comments above in the Results section).  Down at the Pineapple, Chunky remarked on the taxing nature of the paper which they found a deal harder than is normally offered up in their league.  In particular the pictures went down well (apparently picture questions are a rarity south of the Griffin!).  There was a little confusion half way through the verbal rounds with the pairing going awry - but our very capable QM soon sorted this ensuring things were 'even steven' for both teams.  I'm afraid to admit this cock-up on the pairing front was my own fault - I gave the setters the wrong instructions.  Mea culpa!

The Question of the Week

The vote goes to the picture questions used in Round 2 - and in particular to question 4:

Name the artist (known as ‘The Manchester Impressionist’).
