The new year kicks off with no change at the top, as the Girls march on hotly pursued by History Men, Charabancs and Opsimaths (in that order)

The Results

Albert Park slipped up at their new home venue, the Gateway, against Snoopy's Friends

Charabancs of Fire cantered home against The Men TCH at the infamous Stadium of Murk (does the smoking ban apply in Ladybarn?)

Napier Girls celebrated the start of a new year by thrashing the Electric Pigs

Ethel Rodin just missed out by a single point in a nailbiter at the White Swan against the History Men

Opsimaths crept home against the Albert after a match that was pretty even up to the final 2 rounds

The Paper

X-Pats set this week.  Great reaction to this first paper of 2008.  Listen to Kieran:

"Excellent night!

Very, very good quiz and thanks to our porcine friends for supplying a QM at very short notice.

Question of the week - we all liked the previous occupation of Danny De Vito Sid James and Michael Barrymore.  How on earth did Mr. De Vito manage to cut hair?  Did he stand on a ladder?"

....and to Ivor:

"A very close game.  It would have been a tie if Ethel had been able to scramble a steal on the last question but fortunately for us Tammy Wynette did not feature on anyone’s list of possible spouses. Both teams also failed on the Monty Python questions.  Such attention to close textual analysis even surpasses Bible questions! All in all a thumbs up for the quiz with QotW being the one about the innovative clock development of Huygens."

.....and Damian:

"A rather lopsided result yet a most enjoyable evening to usher in the New Year in Ladybarn.  There were some memorable answers.  My favourite was TMTCH's response to one of the questions in the Greater Manchester theme round (the correct answer to which was Mumps).  After much deliberation, they came up with Freckles -  which we thought deserved a point for best try of the night and a far better answer than Mumps.  Indeed only Father M seemed to have heard of this obscure corner of Oldham and there was a suspicion that he had been concentrating too much on one of the bulges in the lower half of his cassock!!

Not to be outdone, Roisin felt a need to interject when TMTCH were deliberating over the Tammy Wynette question.  They eventually decided on Dusty Springfield at which an astonished Roisin leapt to her feet and declared in a loud and knowing voice: "Did you not know she was a LESBIAN?"   Apparently, this was news to one or two of those present - especially an incredulous Father M,  who, having only just been reassured that he was not firing blanks, now had to contend with the knowledge that he could never have been of interest to the lady of his dreams.  Oh Dusty, to think what might have been!!!

A good quiz from the X-Patters with some interesting themes.  Our vote for QotW went to the one about the name of the 1970s play that dealt with the persecution of homosexuals by the Nazis.  The answer, BENT said it all really!!!

At the Club we also enjoyed a challenging and well thought out paper (with the possible exception of Round 7 where only 3 points were scored).  Biggest laughs came when Jitka asked us (Round 4 Question 3) about the cartoon film The 101 Damnations (perhaps some middle-European arthouse movie?) - and then Evelyn wondered how on earth Tammy Wynette had the nerve to record Stand By Your Man!!

I thought the themed rounds were particularly well executed - especially the bird one from which I choose my QotW (see below).

The Question of the Week

The vote this week (from me) goes to Round 5 Question 8:
