Ethel and the Charabancs advance their claims for WIST Champions Cup places next season

The Results

Charabancs of Fire got the better of Albert in a fairly tight affair at the Stadium of Murk

Ethel Rodin defeated Opsimaths to leapfrog over them into 4th spot in the table in the second game at the Stadium of Murk

History Men beat Albert Park - Ivor writes:

"An excellent game which was nip and tuck until the last round.  We did have a prolonged break after round 7 to watch the UEFA Cup penalty shoot-outs.  Fortunately Ann and I managed to keep our eyes on the ball in the last round unlike our respective teams, Spurs and Everton.

Our senior citizens (Tim and Peter) were missing having decided to go on holiday to Egypt to look at (rather appropriately) ancient ruins, so Rupert had his first game of the season which he thoroughly enjoyed (though his prolonged biographical answer to the Fleetwood Mac question is apparently known as 'showboating' in quiz circles according to Clive - thank goodness it didn’t end in a blurt).

Andrew Pig kindly bailed us out as QM.  Unfortunately my promises of Homeric quantities of ale, and of keeping Ann on best behaviour, both failed miserably."

The Men TCH came down to earth, after their stellar performance as setters last week, with a home thrashing by the Napier Girls

X-Pats finished their league season being defeated at home by Snoopy's Friends

The Paper

Electric Pigs set this week.  "Pretty good paper" was the overall reaction at the White Swan.  Particular praise for the themed Round 1.  Brian was miffed that the Latin inscription answer was simply 'Palindrome' since he maintained the quote was more famous for being a magic square - i.e. when placed left to right, top to bottom in a 5 x 5 square the same message emerges reading top to bottom, left to right.  The Opsimaths went right through to the end of Round 5 without disinterring its theme (though I'm not sure it would have helped us much if we had got it).  I wonder how others managed with this theme?

The Question of the Week

The vote this week goes to Round 1 Question 5:

Which 1964 film, directed by Cy Endfield, contains the lines: “The army doesn’t like more than one disaster in a day.  Looks bad in the newspapers and upsets civilians at their breakfast.”?

2008 Cup & Plate

Since we're approaching the end of the league season Gary and I have concocted this year's Cup competition.  You'll find the 2008 Cup fixtures posted on the fixtures page this week.  In line with general feelings last season we have adopted 2 main principles:

  • keep it short, sweet and simple (e.g. no highest scoring losers going through to inflate subsequent rounds)

  • handicap higher placed league teams

As a result you will see that we have decided that the bottom 5 league teams will get a bye through to round 2, and also that the 3 top placed league teams that get eliminated in Round 1 will not get a second bite of the cherry in the Plate.  Instead they will act as setters for the remaining 3 Cup Rounds.  Within the constraints of these rules the actual fixture pairings have been drawn 'out of the hat'.

After last week's humdinger of a paper - and guessing that The Men TCH were unlikely to end up in the top 6 league places - I decided that they should have the honour of setting for Cup Round 1.  Hope this is OK, Men?

Depending on the the views of the Stockport league we aim to hold the WIST Champions Final on the Wednesday following our own Cup & Plate Finals and then the following Wednesday (May 7th) the End of Season evening at the Albert Club.

WIST Champions Cup Semi Finals

Next Wednesday (March 19th) the WIST Champions Cup Semi Finals are being held:

  • Napier Girls v Alexandra at the Griffin

  • Chunky v Charabancs of Fire at the Pineapple (under the viaduct)

Could the WithQuiz teams involved (Charabancs and Napier Girls) please collect the papers (which have been set by myself) from the Red in the normal fashion.  Home teams will be expected to provide QMs.  As in the previous round the quiz format will be à la Stockport.
