The Pigs, the Girls, Snoopy's and the Park move into the Cup semis - whilst the Opsimaths, Albert, The Men and X-Pats go to the Plate

The Results

Snoopy's Friends got the better of The Men TCH at The Didsbury.  Dave B writes:

"The Men's hopes were only extinguished on the penultimate pair.  If only there had been more dead Kennedys and Stiff Little Fingers we'd have romped home.  By coincidence, or perhaps the conclave were consulting the NME during a tea break, the Kennedys play the Manchester Academy on 25 May"

Albert Park put their lowly league standing behind them as they eased to a 5 point victory over Albert

Electric Pigs maintained their reputation as Cup specialists with a squeaky victory over the Opsimaths

Napier Girls edged a close run thing against X-Pats Kieran writes ominously for the rest of us:

"Excellent well-balanced quiz that went down to the last pair - well done Charas.

The night was notable for a couple of moments, both involving Alex. Alex is the first graduate from the Girls' academy - sounds a bit like Cheltenham Ladies' College doesn't it?  Or, maybe more appropriately, St. Trinian's!  Be warned, we Girls have produced nine of the next generation between us ranging from 18 to 6, so our legacy is under construction!

Back to the quiz - the first great moment was Alex shoving five fingers in front of his hapless Dad's face on the 'Natalie Portman/Other Boleyn Girl' question.  Michael was not best pleased when forced to confer (or should that be defer?)  This was swiftly followed by the new boy confidently nailing Leona Lewis (ahem do we detect a theme here?) for a two, thereby comprehensively outscoring his Dad.  Cue much grumbling and talk of 'you've played your last game for this team sonny'.  The thing is that was the other three of us talking to Mike!

Looking forward to much more of this in seasons to come."

The Paper

Charabancs of Fire set this week and as might be expected the paper was full of Charabanciana - entertaining, informative and oblique with a reasonable overall scoring aggregate.  Plenty of questions that would have gone down very well with a decent whisky after a good dinner and an introductory remark such as "Did you know that....".  The Pigs and the Park were full of admiration.  The Opsimaths (on account of losing maybe?) were a bit picky.  "Too much literature and when you did get round to sport they were too quirky" was one Opsimathic comment to the assembled setters (who had devoted their evening off to watching the contest at the Club).  The quality of the paper was confirmed when Kieran's highly complimentary remarks winged in from Fortress Griffin (see above).

The Question of the Week

The vote this week, delivered by the triumphant Albert Park, goes to Bingo Question 25:

In 2003, Geoff Hoon attempted to reassure the British army that the Iraqi town of Umm Qasr was pretty similar to Southampton.  This prompted one squaddie to retort:  "It's nothing like Southampton.  The food is terrible, there aren't any prostitutes and the locals keep shooting at us.  It's more like......".  Where did he think it was more like?
