Welcome back to WithQuiz. The site is gradually coming back to life as the 2009/10 quiz league season rapidly approaches. By my reckoning the date to kick off the first round of league matches is Wednesday October 7th. Unless I hear of some compelling reason to the contrary I will ask Roddy to use this starting date when he performs his fixture list magic in a week or two's time. So far I know of no teams dropping out nor, indeed, of any new recruits. Unless I hear otherwise by September 23rd I will ask Roddy to cast the fixture list for the new season with the same 11 teams. There is one slight change......The Getaways have changed their name to 'The Prodigals' and are going to join the Opsimaths in using the Albert Club as their home venue. After some flirtation with the idea of changing the format of the WIST Champions Cup so that an all-Stockport (or all-WithQuiz) final was avoided, we have decided to leave things as they are. Our top 4 teams (SPW, Charabancs of Fire, Opsimaths and Snoopy's Friends) therefore, will play their top 4 teams (Chunky, Traveller's Call, Alexandra and Tame Valley) on a knock-out basis starting with quarter finals just before Christmas. The Stockport players like the 'on your own for 2 points' element to our games (all their questions are fired at the whole team in conference) - so they have requested that this year each Champions Cup paper is made up of a first half (4 rounds) à la WithQuiz and a second half (2 rounds) à la Stockport. Even if we're not winning the trophies we are gradually winning the opposition over to our format!! I will email all team captains when the fixture list is up on the site later this month. Finally - in line with previous seasons - there was a pre-season friendly between a WithQuiz representative team (captained by Gerry Collins) and a Stockport representative team at the Heaton Moor Rugby Club earlier this evening (Tuesday September 8th). The result was - as has become the tradition - a Stockport victory. Many thanks to the various Historymen, Charabancs and Opsimaths who turned up to fight the good fight.
