Quiz Paper Verdict

This week the paper was set by SPW.

At the Red Lion we were lucky enough to have Kieran as QM to pose the questions and (occasionally) defend his corner.  General consensus was that it was a pretty good paper with plenty of imagination and lots of variety.  I thought the 'name the missing member of the group' round went down really well (after an outing for a similar style round  the other week in the Opsimaths paper).  I suspect this style will crop up a  fair bit form now on.  The round both teams struggled with was the Canadian singer/songwriter round.  What next?  Famous Armenians?

When I called back at the Albert Club later in the evening it was clear that the Charabancs and Prodigals had enjoyed the paper too.  They particularly asked me to draw attention to Roisin's entertaining blurt which placed the Avenger Diana Rigg as the forgotten member of The Supremes.

Down at the White Swan SPW earned rave reviews from Ethel (not a feat easily managed).  James writes:

"Very good quiz; thoughtful questions, excellent themes, well balanced. A great example of how to set an interesting quiz which kept both teams in the tie right up to the last 2 questions."

The Question of the Week

Both the Prodigals and the Charabancs voted this week for the 'musical note themed' Round 7 Question 8:

MGM registered their lion’s roar as a sound trademark.  Similarly RKO registered their tower-transmitting Morse Code.  What did 20th Century Fox register as a sound trademark in 2001?

Chatterbox

After extensive research it emerges that Manchester Withington is the 5th cleverest constituency in the UK - or at least so says Ethel's James.  He goes on...

"Obviously Withquizzers are already well aware of this fact, (and perhaps without us the constituency wouldn't make the top ten).

Thursday February 18th 8pm at the Albert Club.

A Picture round, a music round and three themed rounds gives locals another chance to prove themselves.

It is a Labour party fundraiser and it's £5 per person. Party allegiance isn't necessarily required, (but being a Guardian reading leftie would probably help).  The main point of the evening is sociable beer and quizzing rather than the political indoctrination we will all be suffering over coming months."
