SPW hoist the WIST trophy to complete the treble

Results & Match Reports

This week the WIST Champions final was played at the Griffin......

SPW took an early lead and kept a comfortable distance in front of Stockport's best, The Alexandra.  After living in Stockport for the first 2 years of its life the WIST Cup crosses into South Manchester.  And if you don't believe me, well here's Kieran accepting the trophy from the Alex's Mike Wagstaffe at the end of a hard fought match, at the end of a hard fought season.

Quiz Paper Verdict

The paper was set by The Opsimaths on behalf of the WithQuiz league.

It seemed a tough paper though I note that the aggregate score of 89 was higher than the average aggregate achieved in previous WIST rounds this year.  Judging by the reactions around the tables the themed Round 3 seemed to be the favourite section of the paper with the model railway question (Round 1 Question 22) getting the most boos.

The Question of the Week

This week the vote goes to Round 2 Question 10:

One of New Zealand’s highest paid sports personalities is Steve Williams.  What does he do?

At last week's Cup/Plate finals it was suggested to me that we should introduce a handicap system for next year's cup competitions in an attempt to bring equality of opportunity.  Each team would be advantaged or disadvantaged according to the difference between their average 'score for' and the average 'score for' across all teams throughout the league season.

Looking at the season just completed the average 'score for' across all teams was 35.  The average 'score for' team by team with the resultant handicap that might have been applied in each cup match would therefore have been:

Ave.
score

for

...therefore handicap

Using such a system would mean we needn't structure the cup draw to give advantage to teams lower down the table.  We would simply draw the names out of a hat (as Gary used to do in days of yore).  What do you think?

Next Wednesday we put the season to rest with the annual prize-giving ceremony and fun quiz evening at the Albert Club.  Last year's winners please remember to bring the trophies along.  Hope you can all get there - and feel free to bring guests.  All will be very welcome.
