Compulsory Meat Raffle score their first success - the Pigs go top

Results & Match Reports

TMTCH kicked off their campaign at the Parrswood with a defeat at the hands of early league leaders, the Electric Pigs.

Albert lost out to the travelling Bards at the Fletcher Moss.

Compulsory Meat Raffle not only reduced the average age of the front room at The Victoria pub in Withington by a few decades but also notched up their first WithQuiz victory against the Opsimaths (other teams please note that Fuel Café seems to have scheduled an 'Open Mic' night in their upstairs room every Wednesday evening for the foreseeable future and that The Victoria pub a few doors away proved an excellent home venue for CMR).

Calluna Pussycats, playing their second Albert Club derby in two weeks, were defeated by the Prodigals.

...and in the first White Swan derby of the season the Charabancs of Fire, having fallen behind in the first half, managed to make their superior Irish knowledge count, drawing ahead of Ethel Rodin in the second half

Quiz Paper Verdict

This week's paper was set by The Historymen.

No getting away from the facts - it was tough!!.  The average aggregate from around the grounds was just 57 points.  In the CMR/Opsimaths tussle (graced by setters Ivor and David) there were 14 'unanswerables' (i.e. almost 1 in every 4 questions left everyone scratcning their heads).  This number is pretty high. "Too hard and too Irish" was the comment from the Prodigals/Pussycats match where the aggregate score was a mere 45 points.  Andrew's diplomatic comment from the Parrswood: "Opinion was divided as to the quality of the paper".

In defence of the setters it was noticeable at The Victoria how CMR faces lit up at the pop questions (set I presume by younger Historian David).  Beware though CMR might have been hot on (relatively) contemporary music but they also seemed to know as much as the Opsimaths on 1970s TV series and 19th century novelists.

From the White Swan Damian comments in similar vein on what proved to be a toughie...

"We found the paper itself a tad on the hard side.  None of us had ever heard of the famed concert pianists Martha Argerich and Valentina Lisitsa.  Similarly, in the picture round, the identity of the handsome lad had us all scratching our bonces - even the good Father whose knowledge of good-looking boys is second to none.  The answer 'Justin Bieber' did nothing whatever to enlighten our ignorance.  On the brighter side the themed rounds were good fun to work out and kept us all engaged."

The Question of the Week

CMR's Rachael (who happens to own - and rate - one of the girl band's albums) chose Round 4 Question 5:

What word links the UK girl band duo whose biggest hit single was Trouble in 1994; and a 1975 film set in the 24 hour period in 1968 on the eve of the US presidential election?
