SPW through to play Chunky in the WIST Final

Results & Match Reports

SPW clambered back from recent league upsets to beat the Historymen in a packed Griffin snug.  Bob Ganley officiated most ably as QM, just slipping up once on the 'Kate Middleton's parents question' (well who wouldn't) and having to resort to a bit of spare (like William really).  The evening was long but full of jollity with Historywoman Anne in top form joining her two colleagues, David and Ivor (Tim and Peter were off seeing Florence).  There was an unscheduled 10 minute delay in mid flight when Ivor was called to attend to some outbreak of microbiology in Oldham via mobile phone, and - bugger me - a medical question came up.  We waited and waited - and waited - for the outbreak in Oldham to subside, and then, when it did, Ivor returned to provide the..... wrong answer.

Meanwhile underneath the arches in Pineappleland Chunky beat their rivals Tiviot to reach the 'Final of the Titans'.

Quiz Paper Verdict

This week's paper was set by Les Williams of The Stockport League.  Full marks to Les.  I think he managed the WithQuiz-style rounds excellently.  Themes and interest but nothing too obscure.  Always a good sign for the setter, there were a number of Question of the Week candidates suggested at close of play.

The Question of the Week

This week the vote goes to Spares Question 4:

In Dad’s Army, Private Walker was conscripted but discharged from the Army for what reason?

Hopefully we are now fairly clear about the arrangements for the Val Draper Cup and Plate Competitions - what the draw is, who'll be setting the first round paper and how we are to calculate the handicaps to be used.  Just as a reminder I'll repeat the handicap system on this page the week before the first round matches take place.  For the Finals paper on May 25th I suggest we use the 'Knocked Out United' approach which we've now used for the past 2 years whereby the 8 teams not involved in the finals each submit a round to an editor who then prepares the paper.  The 4 teams in the 2 finals will each vote for which round they think was the best round of the paper and the team that set that round will get a prize at the Presentation evening.  Just a slight warning that we have yet to have the date of the WIST Final confirmed by our friends over the river (I've assumed June 1st on the Fixtures page).  If this date comes forward by a week, or even two, then some of the rounds of Cup matches will slip back to accommodate.

As for the league we still have 4 more weeks to run.  I have been lucky in getting John Tolan, late of this parish (the Ethel Rodin parish to be precise) to set the Dummy paper for the last week of the league season (April 27th) when all 12 teams will be in action.  John is retired and living in Yorkshire these days but keeps in touch with Peter from the Historymen so I was able to contact him through that route.

I have now booked the Albert Club for the End of Season Presentation evening on June 8th and also warned the Club that we may want to use it on May 25th and June 1st for various Cup Finals depending on where the participating teams want to play.
