SPW, Opsimaths and the Pigs all win so no change at the top

Pussycats off the mark

Results & Match Reports

Remember that old Blackadder Goes Forth joke when the guns go quiet just before they go over the top and Captain George thinks a ceasefire has been declared?  "We've survived it - the Great 1914 -1917 War."  Well 1917 took on a whole new significance this week - it was the score in the Pussycats' first WithQuiz league triumph.  Clearly more tuned into Indie music and meat than the Prodigals (despite Anne-Marie and Danny revealing that their Dad was a butcher) the Pussycats romped home to take the cream.  The Club, unusually boisterous for a Thursday night with karaoke in full croak, came to a grinding halt as thunderous applause echoed out from the Snooker Room when Karen sealed the deal by answering "Abertay".  All season they've been waiting to buy a round for the losers and tonight they had their way.  And just to prove it here's the Prodigals' scorecard for posterity to savour:

TMTCH failed to earn the massive bribe on offer from the Opsimaths and lost at home to SPW.

It was a happy evening at the Albert Club; the Historymen were the opposition - a guarantee of end-to-end cheerfulness; the Opsimaths won the contest; but most of all it was a good evening because we were all able to wish Colin, the Opsiest Opsimath of them all, a happy birthday.  And it was a sort of special one too (I am forbidden by Opsimath lore to mention the number).  Colin QMed last night and was as crystal clear as ever amidst the tumult of a Wednesday evening at the Club.  Although ripe in years Colin is no slouch when it comes to popular culture - never mind these upstart students.  Only the other week he got a question about Don McLean and American Pie right for 2 points.

Electric Pigs beat Ethel Rodin - but only just.  Andrew reports that The Pigs were 18-8 up after 6 rounds only to be one point down going into the final question.  Dave duly scored his fifth 2 of the evening (amazing on such a low-scoring quiz) and saved the bacon.

A three-handed Bards team lost to Albert.

Quiz Paper Verdict

This week's paper was set by The Compulsory Meat Raffle.  It was pretty tough as the average aggregate score implies.  At the Club there were 24 unanswerables and Andrew reports 37 unanswerables at the Fletcher Moss.  Amidst the head-scratching, however, there was, what I thought, the best themed round of the season based on the highest buildings in the world in reverse chronological order.  Kieran perpends the paper:

"Hmmmm.  There were some good ideas - the Compulsory Meat Raffle round was an excellent idea and the questions were fine. The food and drink songs were ok, though there should have been no need to use peaches or candy twice. The 'choose your subject' pot luck was ok as well, if a little tougher than in previous incarnations. The viral videos wasn't for us (it's our age you know) but we can only hope that young Historyman David sorted the greybeard Opsimaths out on that one (Ed: Did he hell!!). The other rounds were much tougher with not that much to intrigue the participants, hence the low scoring. And note to question setters (yes I know after last week but I don't care) you should never pair "which two Cambridge colleges" with "which four Oxford colleges".  It's just not fair. The way round it, if you feel compelled to set that question, is to give two of the Oxford colleges and ask for the other two."

Mary ('Dusty') O'Brien comments:

"Wow!  Both teams found this a difficult quiz and the final score reflected this.  The Bards did not score any points in 3 rounds.  I think the paper reflects the changing face of the league but if we are to encourage new teams, we must accept that the age of the players will be lower and the questions will reflect more modern interests.  But on a lighter note, at times tonight, we did think some of the questions were a lot of rocky mountain oysters!"

...and on an even lighter note Ivor thought the whole thing (especially Round 4) was 'offal'.

The Question of the Week

This week the Albert vote for Round 7/8 Question 10:

Which British Prime Minister had the nickname, 'Jack Boot'?

Next week's match between the Bards and the Pigs isn't being played until the following Tuesday (i.e. April 26th) so I will not put the Pussycats paper on the site until then, nor comment on it in a way that gives any of the questions away.  Despite this your usual feedback next week is welcome as ever - it just might need more editing than normal.
