SPW and Opsimaths keep on going - so all hinges on next Wednesday

Results & Match Reports

TMTCH lost to the Prodigals.  Mark texts in that they all thought it was a good fun quiz with a most enjoyable final round.  "Well done Calluna!"

Historymen lost to Charabancs.  Damian reports in:

"As always when we play the Historymen, we had a thoroughly enjoyable evening!  Before we'd even started, they asked if 'it was going to be a needle match?'. After a huddled consultation wondering what on earth they might mean we assured them that Roisin had definitely left her ball of wool and knitting gear at home.  From the strange look in Ivor and Peter's eyes we wondered if there might have been more to their question than we had anticipated!  Excellent paper from the Pussycats that was thoroughly enjoyed by all"

Ethel Rodin lost to SPW.  Kieran comments:

"Overall we were pretty happy and so I guess it's on to next week's matches to decide the destination of the title.  Will the Bards or the Pigs be the more leggy after playing each other only 24 hours before?"

Albert lost to Opsimaths in the friendly and familiar atmosphere that Mary & co. always engender at the Fletcher Moss.  Probably the highlight of the match was the obvious relish with which Eveline laid into the final round - but you'll have to wait and see what it was all about.

The Bards beat the Electric Pigs in a jolly affair at the Cricket Club played 6 days later than the other matches (the Pigs graciously offering to postpone to fit in with the Bards' holiday commitments).  As a spectator my only worry was that the Bards might have tired themselves out in the build up to tomorrow's epic encounter with SPW which THEY MUST WIN.

Quiz Paper Verdict

This week's paper was set by The Calluna Pussycats.  An excellent effort according to feedback received so far.  Well worked themes, plenty of points on offer and a gorgeous ending.  More will be revealed next Tuesday but until then it's schtum (see Chatterbox below).

(Tuesday 26th) Now the super injunction has been lifted, we can talk openly about the Calluna paper (the judge has listened to the submissions and we are no longer Giggsed - oops typo - that should read gagged).  The Pussycats have clearly got the hang of things and set a cracking paper.  Indeed Anne-Marie ventured that the spanking good question that got the QotW nomination was almost as good as the Charabancs' legendary Bambi question a few weeks ago.  Praise indeed!!  The 'Where am I?' Round 1 got things off to a cracking start with the monster theme perhaps edging it as the best themed round of the evening.

The Question of the Week

By universal acclaim the vote this week goes to Round 8 Question 6:

Which brand of ladies underwear launched in 2000 started a new trend in body shaping garments and was endorsed by Oprah Winfrey?

Chatterbox

Hats off to Roddy!!  With incredible prescience 6 months ago he managed to arrange the fixture list so that the top 4 league teams play each other in the nail-biting finish to our league season.  And for the final flourish of the season, we welcome back John Tolan (once of the Ethel variety) who is our guest Dummy setter.  Could SPW slip at the final hurdle?  Watch this space!!

No question paper up on the site until next Tuesday (26th) as the Bards v Pigs match is not played until then.  Do send me your feedback nevertheless and I will comment on the site as usual on Thursday/Friday trying not to give any hints to the late players.

And I've now had confirmation from Chunky in the Stockport League that they are happy to play the WIST Champions Cup Final at the Albert Club on Wednesday June 1st with the usual 8.30pm kick off.  This enables me now to confirm all the dates and venues for the final weeks of the season (see the Fixtures page).
