The Bards power
on towards their first league title whilst the Opsimaths slip back;
the Charas maintain their winning sequence |
Results & Match Reports |
Ethel Rodin gained the edge against the
Prodigals
in a 'good fun' evening at the Cricket Club.
TMTCH
fell at home to the Historymen. Ivor reports:
TMTCH (playing first) raced to a five point lead at half time but round 6 was
their nemesis and we held on (for once) to record a win. A detailed look at the
stats however (you know what I’m like) reveal that the most significant factor
in the win was an uneven break of 9-4 in the unanswered questions (note I have
yielded to peer pressure in nomenclature). Graham from TMTCH got 5 twos
and still ended up on the losing side.
Oh, and I
forgot to mention it was a most enjoyable evening with our Derbyshire opponents
in a warm pub with cold beer. Young David’s comment “I’ve had that Reverend
James before you know” could have been taken out of context were one not aware
of the names of guest beers.
...and from The
Men, Graham chips in:
As
The Men They Couldn't Hang went into a 20-15 lead at the halfway stage, we
somehow knew it was too good to be true.
Electric Pigs played and
lost - just - to a rejuvenated Charabancs who are prancing up the table at a rate of knots.
Andrew comments:
A round of applause from everyone greeted Gerry dredging up
Supertramp to win the quiz on the final question. The lead
changed hands a couple of times in this thriller at The FM.
As the Great Gaz said: "Exciting, nip and tuck, one of the best
quizzes of the season so far. An excellent evening!"
Compulsory Meat Raffle
perished at home to Albert. Mary sums up the ambience at the
Turnpike:
An enjoyable paper with the
added bonus of a Smoke Fairy QM (Barry). The scoring for both
teams was inconsistent. For instance, Round 1 was 10 -2 in
favour of The Albert; Round 7 was 8-3 to CMR. A good
atmosphere at The Turnpike and wow, isn't the drink cheap?
Mind you, everywhere seems cheaper than the Fletcher Moss these
days!
Opsimaths
were subjected to a terrible mauling at home to the mighty Bards who really do look unstoppable. Bard Steve got a
mere 7 two-pointers. Biggest laugh of the evening?
When I congratulated the Bards I did just mention that I thought
the Opsimaths had been a tad unlucky. "Nothing like as
unlucky as those on the Atlantic Conveyor who jumped into the
sea in the Falkland Islands 23 years before it sunk," said Jim
(the question paper - now corrected on this website - said 2005
rather than 1982 for Round 7 Question 8). |
Quiz Paper Verdict |
This week the
paper was set by I Blame Smoke Fairies.
No complaints and plenty of delight all round. Themes
on Scottish islands and Test Match venues played right into my
interest zone - so many thanks
Kieran.
Trouble is we were trounced nonetheless!! A mild
controversy over the teasel. The Opsimaths said "burdock"
which we felt is, to all intents and purposes the same as a
teasel, but got no points.
The Historymen and TMTCH
similarly enjoyed their evening out with the Fairies. Ivor
sums up:
Quiz went down
well. I wonder which Smoke Fairy set the 70s/80s band theme? I can
visualise him rustling through his album collection and coming up with those
bands so popular with students at the cutting edge of prog rock. Just for fun I
had a look at what is in the bottom of my cupboard to find a rather more
eclectic collection including Gilbert O’Sullivan, the Carpenters, Haircut 100,
OMD, Wings, Gallagher and Lyle and Soft Cell. Hardly the making of any
kind of round at all. I also liked the music labels round. This
might be worth a reprise some time in the future (though thinking of questions
with Beggar’s Banquet or Parlaphone or RCA in the answer might be a challenge) .
Finally from the Parrswood Graham comments:
We all felt the quiz was a good
'un. A fair cross section of musical questions, from Sister Rosetta Tharpe
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xzr_GBa8qk) through
Glam Rock, Prog Rock, and Punk to Gabba Gabba Hey Hey. P.S. Here's a clip
from a documentary I saw on BBC4 with Sister Rosetta singing 'Didn't It Rain?'
in a live gig at Chorlton Railway Station in the late 50's early
60's....amazing!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0tnh0xeDzw) and
here's another of her singing 'Trouble in Mind' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzRm4K7NZm0&feature=related).

The Question
of the Week |
This week the
Historymen and the Hangmen plump for Round 3 Question 8 (with a
sports stadium theme):
What catchphrase/chant is associated with a
seminal New York band of the 1970s - the group usually cited as
being the first punk rock band?

Chatterbox |
It turns out that Eric the
venerable Bards' travelling QM is a dab hand at photography. So after he'd
posed the questions to us we posed our bodies for him. Beware it could
happen to you next time you play the Bards!!
]
...oh and if
you're wondering who Eric is well dream on...
