The Historymen romp home in the Val Draper Cup Final in West Didsbury; over in the Village the Pigs land the Plate

Results & Match Reports

Val Draper Cup Final:

The Historymen started 3 points ahead and just didn't stop going, leaving the Smoke Fairies in their wake.

A wonderful final marked by merriment and an appreciative crowd.  At the close the naturally happy smile which normally envelops Ivor's face had turned into an unnatural grin which (I wouldn't mind betting) is still there.  We thought of ringing his wife, Alison, to warn her but, what with one thing and another......A well-deserved victory for a great team.  They all played their part including Peter who nobly volunteered for the bench.  There were many high points to the evening but Anne proclaiming Round 4 Question 5 as "another chuffing chough question" was pretty special.

WithQuiz Plate Final:

Albert ended up on the wrong end of the Fletcher Moss Plate Derby with The Electric Pigs running out winners by 11 points.

Quiz Paper Verdict

This week the paper was set by Knocked Out United.  By general consent from, both venues, this was an excellent paper with which to end the WithQuiz competitive season - and so it should have been when it represented the cream of what the 7 non-finalist teams could put together.  Every round garnered some support but putting together the votes from all four finalists, the winner of the Best Round of Finals Night was Round 4 (the Capes Round) submitted by none other than The Men They Couldn't Hang.  Round 2 ('32 Epitaphs') submitted by The Prodigals was runner up and both Round 1 (Fish) by Ethel Rodin and Round 7 (Boxing weights) by The Opsimaths were mentioned in dispatches.  Dave, be sure to come to the End of Season evening in a fortnight at the Albert Club - there'll be a bottle for you to collect.

Andrew sums up from the Fletcher Moss:

A great quiz marred only by describing Lichfield as a town, not a city, which cost us a point.

On a personal note I loved Dave Barras' epitaph pair that started Round 8.  "To save your world you asked this man to die; would this man, could he see you now, ask why?" brought a lump to my QM's throat.

The Question of the Week

This week all four teams voted for Round 4 Question 2 - part of TMTCH's 'Cape' themed round:

The future of which genus provoked a dispute that saw Thor and Odin exchange blows with Andromeda?

Chatterbox

Tony tells me that it's now confirmed that the WIST Cup Final between The Bards and Chunky will be played on Thursday May 17th at Didsbury Cricket Club starting at the usual 8.30pm.

.....and Andrew tells me:

Ken and Lynn at The Fletcher Moss retire at the end of this month and are having a barbecue to mark the occasion from 2.00 p.m. this coming Sunday, 22nd.  All are welcome.
