The World record for tied quiz matches in M20 tumbles as Albert and TMTCH clock up the 4th of the season

Results & Match Reports

The Charabancs of Fire were swept aside by The Electric Pigs who were in razor sharp form following their practice match against the Bards yesterday.

Ethel Rodin just failed at the last to an Opsimaths team who just do more eating out in Didsbury than their opponents.

The Prodigals were too strong for Compulsory Meat Raffle at the Albert Club.

Albert were just caught at the last by The Men They Couldn't Hang in a thrilling tied game at the Fletcher Moss.  Graham emails...

"The Hangers and the Alberts fought out an honourable draw at the Fletcher Moss.  A full strength Hangers outfit came up against a trio of Alberts and thoroughly enjoyed the quiz.  Sterling QM'ing by Mary and all round fairness by both sides resulted in another draw for The Men They Couldn't Hang."

The History Men lost out at the Red to The Bards.  Ivor sums up...

"A victory for the Bards with a round to spare despite getting 6 of the 9 unanswered questions. What really made the difference was an impressive 9 steals to our 1. The music round and Round 5 proved our nemesis - getting a single point on each.  Impressive number of blurts on our side too (and we were all guilty).  Perhaps the best way to avoid these is to have a slow methodical think for every question (this seems to work well for the Electric Pigs and the Smoke Fairies) but there was no chance of hanging around tonight with Peter in the QM chair outdoing even Paxo in his irritation about slow play!"

and Tony adds his twopennyworth...

"We enjoyed the quiz.  It was very clear that the setter had really applied his mind to the strengths and weaknesses of the number 4s, particularly for the team going second.  It really worked.  As usual we lost the toss and went second. Net result was that I was the Jonah on the Cartmell computation table. We enjoyed a good night's quizzing in a very convivial atmosphere with QM Peter pushing the game along at a cracking pace."

Quiz Paper Verdict

This week the setters were I Blame Smoke Fairies.  I really liked this paper.  The round of linked first names was just nicely pitched to tease (although perhaps a handout of the names might have saved a bit of time and repetition) and the pop/geography round for those who hate pop but love geography questions, or hate geography but love pop questions was perfect for the moaners and enthusiasts alike (i.e. everyone).  Pity about the second half of the theme in Round 2 which was interesting but not really needed to help solve the questions.  Could there have been some way in which identifying this second thematic element would have been essential in order to get the relevant thematic prompt?  Roddy did have a quiet, and reasonable, grumble about the balance of the paper with 7 of the 9 unanswered questions coming the Ethel way.

Anne-Marie and the Prodigals liked it too...

"Great quiz as usual from the Fairies, although no-one got the random wine region hidden theme."

and a pat on the back from the Charabancs...

"The questions were an entertaining and generally well thought out assortment of quiz trivia. The hidden themes were well crafted and, even if we could guess them, it didn't guarantee we could answer the question...which is as it should be!  One minor quibble was the connections/first names themed round which we we thought an excellent idea but rather difficult to answer (anybody actually know the names of the members of the Chilcott enquiry?).  However our esteemed leader, Father M did make an exception for the Pussy Riot question which he jumped out of his seat and answered immediately.  I assure you, what that man doesn't know about troublesome pussy ain't worth knowing!"

and Ivor's feedback...

"Quiz questions very good - the name connections round was eclectic to say the least."

The Question of the Week

This week Fr Megson proffers his blessing to Round 7 Question 6:

What is the connection between the following first names: Maria, Yekaterina and Nadezhda?
