A full house for the End of Season evening at the Albert Club

An excellent end to the season (well, almost end - the WIST Champions Cup final will be held next Wednesday at the Albert Club between Chunky and INBTO)!

Every WithQuiz team was fully represented and - as last year - Mike Wagstaffe from the Alexandra team in the Stockport League set an excellent 100-question 4-round quiz to get us all off on our summer quiz sabbatical (click here to see the paper).  The winners on the night were Ethel Rodin who sculpted a squeaky victory just one point ahead of the Opsimaths.

At the half way point in the evening Ivor delighted us with his summary of the season, excited us as he juggled his speech notes and finally invited us to cheer the various trophy winners (see here to get the full list).

As in previous years the Question of the Season was voted for during the evening from amongst the 28 Questions of the Week nominated on the website during the season.  The results were as follows:

Which artist wrote “I inherited the seeds of madness. The angels of fear, sorrow, and death stood by my side since the day I was born"?  His Nazi-orchestrated funeral left the impression with his fellow countrymen that he was a Nazi sympathizer.

(and)

Which series of children's books is about a group of unwanted vegetables, fruits, legumes and nuts who were swept to the corner of a shop but ran away together and set up home in and around an old, forgotten garden shed?  They spawned a brand of yoghurts based on the names of the characters.

Edvard MUNCH Bunch

Where, amongst others would you be able to find Billy, Borris, Malinda and Markus?

Ikea

(Borris is a doormat, Malinda a cushion, Markus an office chair, and Billy is the ubiquitous bookcase)

3

TMTCH

Which honorary Member of the British Empire’s record breaking day of the 28th of September 1996 started on Wall St and ended with spectacular leap off Fujiyama Crest shortly after 17.35?

Frankie Dettori

...so Ethel's skipper, Roddy, duly collected the wine for a comprehensive setting triumph by his team.

Brian from the Opsimaths picked up a bottle too, for his submission of the best round for the 'Knocked Out' United Cup final paper.

As the evening ended it seemed to me (and to a few others I spoke to) that Withington & District Quiz League (to give it its full and ancient title) is in the rudest of health.  We will return to do it all over again - and with relish - in the autumn.

In the mean time if you want to see a few photos to prove to those at home that they really were at the Albert Club well click here.
