Results & Match Reports

Ethel Rodin beat Compulsory Mantis Shrimp to zoom to the top of the table enjoying a clear one pointsworth of daylight between themselves and Albert.  Even this early in the season the bookies are speculating about the possibility of a virgin WithQuiz League Champion come May.

James reports....

"Good quiz - not overtaxing.  Quite close until Round 4 (8-3) and Round 5 (10-1).  Roddy came out with our answer of the week (ooh la la!) which was a total guess.  On reflection he might have heard of The Faces but probably hadn't.

QotW was one of our unanswereds - the contact lens one."

The Men They Couldn't Hang lost to The History Men.  Home team stalwart, Graham, sends this summary....

"Once again the Hangers were on the losing side, no thanks to myself losing the plot in the 'numbers' round by answering 'Magic Roundabout' to the 'Room 101' question.  However, many thanks go to Josh who provided an admirable QM and orchestrated the great fun we had at the Stadium Of Light that is now the Parr's Wood!  Il Capitano Barras may have regretted going first on the winning toss of a coin though!"

....while a relieved Ivor reports thus....

"Points on the board at last (at least for us!).  This was our first return to the Parrswood Hotel since its refurbishment and we were rather surprised to find the car park full and (even bigger shock) people in the pub.  We did get tucked into the snug however, and the evening was only disturbed by the cacophonous cheer greeting the 91st minute winner (scored by City of course, not ourselves).  As usual TMTCH were excellent company."

The Charabancs of Fire lost to Albert who are now firing on all cylinders in the number two spot in the table.  Damian reports from the losers' enclosure....

"After last week's kick-off-of-the-season victory against a depleted team of Shrimpers, a similarly depleted team of Charas (minus the clerical member of the Irish contingent) were inevitably brought back down to Earth with a rude bump by the Albert.  A comfortable lead in the first 2 rounds was quickly eroded in every subsequent round until even our hopeful ambition of reaching 30 points was thwarted.  A combination of some bad decision-making on our part, together with some red-hot opponents led to our crushing downfall.  Put it this way: it was not one of our better nights!

MOotW (Missed Opportunity of the Week): Eveline coming up with West Bromwich Albion and being pointedly ignored by her team-mates.  Did she take this with the equanimity and sang-froid for which she is not normally noted?  Well, tonight - yes you guessed it - she was not in the mood to be even-spirited and cold-blooded - the roof exploded.  Apparently somebody cheekily suggested that WBA was probably her stock answer to all football questions - sorry, Eveline!"

The Electric Pigs beat The Prodigals at the Fletcher Moss.  Anne-Marie gives us a brief update - tinged with a sadness that we all share this season....

"Great fun Quiz from the Dönitz as usual. The Pigs were three-handed with Andrew acting as a very capable QM - but he was no Mary!"

The Opsimaths lost to The Bards of Didsbury rather heavily at the Albert Club.  Howell and myself were otherwise engaged but looking at the paper I doubt whether we'd have made a decisive difference.  This was the Bards' evening and Sarah in particular revelled in the music questions I'm told.  Well, game on Tony!  We'll be out looking for revenge after Christmas.  Finally a word of thanks for Mr Ganley, DD's Question master extraordinaire who took time out from the Griffin to QM at the Club for us.

A joyful Tony puts his own spin on what was clearly a most enjoyable Bardic affair....

"Tonight's quiz was played in the upper room at the Tennis Club which was a splendid venue for a quiz. The Bar staff were most obliging , ferrying chairs, tables and beer in great quantities.  The Grand Admiral lent Bob to act as question-master.  He was in affable mode and set a cheerful tone from start to finish.  Dönitz set a quiz which was supremely suited to the Bards' strengths with Steve and Sarah flourishing on a musical diet.  There was only one unanswered question all night and it fell to number 4 on the team going second.  I haven't stopped moaning about that yet - but then I haven't complained about it either.  Somebody asked about matters ceramic which almost provoked a breached of Mike's injunction on that subject.

The paper was entertaining as have been all the quizzes set this season.  Wednesdays have been the happiest days of the week since the autumn began and I am looking forward to a five horse race for the top spot come late spring next year."

Quiz Paper Verdict

This week the questions were set by Dunkin Dönitz.

Another stonking pointsfest of an evening with the average aggregate just topping 80 points for the second time in the four weeks of the season played.  Not a bad word to be had for the Dunkers, half of whom were - like myself - watching City get out of jail in the 91st minute at the Etihad.

Here is the feedback from you....

Damian....

"Tonight's paper from the Dunking Dönitzers was, like last week's offering from the Piggies, full of themes both overt and covert and, again, like last week we failed to grasp most of the covert ones.  I'll lay my cards on the table: I just don't think hidden themes are our forte.  Just tell us what they are and we might have a chance!  That said, we found the questions fair, well-balanced and generally enjoyable.  We particularly enjoyed the 'Back-To-The-Future' round with all the answers pointing to today's date making my own blurted 'The 30 Years War'  instead of 'Trafalgar'  even more inexcusable!

QotW: The consensus was for the 'Jack Kerouac' Question"

....and Ivor....

"The quiz paper was very well received with only 6 unanswered questions and a healthy 19 twos.  The themes were well developed and very few questions were uninteresting.

QotW was the war-time Home Secretary’s grandson question which fell to TMTCH.  After fruitless minutes thinking through Tory possibilities they made an inspired leap to the Labour possibilities and came up with Mandy in the nick of time."

....and Graham....

"All in all a great quiz and many thanks to the setters Dunkin Dönitz."

....and finally Mike O'B....

"If you are a music and a football fan this was a great quiz, if not it was good in parts but you were likely to feel out of things for certain sections.  The themes were imaginative - everyone enjoyed the 'Back To The Future' round.  Eveline has demanded that the 1920 football league champions question should be question of the week since she opted for the right answer, but in our masterful male way we brushed her aside and  sent her to make some coffee or do some hoovering while we men worked hard at carefully reasoning our way to the wrong answer.  We have been assured that we will hear more about this in the coming weeks so that's something to look forward to!"

The Question of the Week

This week the QotW is dedicated to football fanatic Eveline who has toiled long and hard over the years in Albert's ranks never to be acknowledged for her supreme mastery of the beautiful game.  Tonight was no exception as she arrowed in on the right answer for this question only to be snubbed by her MCP colleagues.  Bravo Eveline, WithQuiz's very own WoManchester.  So Round 5 Question 6 gets it this week:

Which team won its only League Championship in 1920 and its only League Cup in 1966?

A fascinating email from Andrew about WoManchester.....

"Please can I thank you for the messages of support for the campaign to erect a statue of a woman in Manchester which has now moved on to the next stage. This article talks about the announcement of the shortlist of candidates and details on how the public can vote.

The Manchester Evening News website article from yesterday carries the shortlist of candidates.

800 people have voted already  since the voting went live yesterday and five of them are in their nineties - so age is no barrier to use of computers and social media!  Please take a few minutes to vote!  And please pass it on!  Thank you.  Andrew.

My money's on Eveline!
