WithQuiz snatch back the WIST Trophy after a year in the care of the Stockport League |
The Result |
The Stockport League lost the WIST Cup to the WithQuiz League in a close encounter at the Albert Club. Scores were on the low side for such matches but the two sides were always within touching distance of one another. Stockport started at a gallop but got pulled back and overtaken in the second period of the first half so that WithQuiz were just ahead at the break. After the break WithQuiz pretty well maintained this lead running out victors by just 4 points. Nick Mills captained WithQuiz (the traditional league skipper, Tony Hammond, is on holiday) and ably supported by Michael (Prodigal), David (History Men), Damian, John and Gerry (Charas), Graham (TMTCH) and James (Ethel R) they managed to get their noses in front and keep them there. It was good to get back to the friendly banter and civilised exchanges of a good-natured quiz evening after a summer of Brexits, exits and general depression (at least for some). Let's hope that the coming winter Wednesday evenings can provide some much-needed diversions for those in need of cheer! |
The Paper |
This week's paper was set jointly by
myself (Mike Bath) on behalf of the WithQuiz
League and Mike Wagstaffe on behalf of the Stockport
League. Mike set the WithQuiz-style rounds
and I set the Stockport-style rounds. Somewhat low-scoring for these mixed WithQuiz/Stockport style papers (last year the aggregate score was 122 points whereas we only managed 112 this year). Nevertheless plenty of interest and feverish conferring. In Round 2 I had intended to announce the theme (i.e. words in the answers that could be preceded by either the word 'With' or the word 'Stock' to make other words) but the Stockport team asked me not to reveal the theme as is the tradition in Stockport and I suspect this made this round a little too hard. The 'Poland' question in Round 6 provided plenty of diversionary material before people realised it was just another Mike Wagstaffe Man City-linked poser. Great stuff and this rightly won the 'Question of the Week' award. Not far behind was the one about Tammy Wynette's 1968 contradictory hits, D-I-V-O-R-C-E followed by Stand By Your Man. Make up your mind, woman! |
