The Alex and Travellers Call keep Stockport's hopes alive but elsewhere WithQuiz clean up

The Results

WIST Quarter Finals

Having tied the scores on the quiz paper proper Ethel Rodin lost to Travellers Call 4-5 on the tie-break round (the spare questions).  So for the second year running the Ladybarn team exit by the closest of margins in the first round.  James sends this....

"We were 27-17 down after Round One then won the next round 9-5.  By the end of the paper the scores were level so we decided to use the spares as a 'tiebreak round'."

Albert go through to the next round since their opponents, Smart Italics, were unable to field a team and had to cede the fixture.

Locomotiv Stöckpört also had to cede their tie to The Opsimaths because they couldn't raise a full team.

The Alexandra beat The Bards of Didsbury.  Mike Wagstaffe sends this victor's report....

"We last met Tony & Co in the European semis last February, when we left the cricket club with our tails between our legs following an absolute trouncing.  So our hopes weren't high last night, especially as we were missing our in Algarvio Captain.

We've been keeping an eye on our opponents' recent (lack of) form and we just knew they would kick-start their season when they met us.  Wrong.  We went (slightly) ahead in the first round and managed to keep the Bards at arm's length for the rest of the quiz, although we couldn't really relax until the final round.  Although it's obviously just a matter of chance, it doesn't half help when you get the batting order correct and the right questions go to the right people.  The Bards were pleasant company again and the quiz was played in an excellent spirit."

A-Trophy Quarter Finals

Dunkin' Dönitz beat The Railway Fliers.

Kieran reports on the state of the world with a few passing references to last night's tussle at the Griffin....

"So on day 1 of the post-liberal era as the US abdicates the moral leadership of the globe that nobody endowed it with in the first place, we played a pub quiz.  I'm delaying my cultural and economic boycott of the United States of Hate until Friday since David and I are going to see Paul Simon at the Apollo tomorrow evening - a poignant reminder that America is as capable as anywhere of producing art of brilliant beauty, informed by compassion and created by a jaw-dropping genius.

'Time it was,
And what a time it was
It was . . .
A time of innocence
A time of confidences

Long ago . . . it must be . . .
I have a photograph
Preserve your memories
They’re all that’s left you'

Oh dear, maudlin and nothing to do with the quiz, but the world has lost something that was a noble ideal and may yet find that an even more important foundation of the civilisation we casually assume to be certain and fixed is threatened.

What the hell - we won!  A match done and dusted by 10.00 pm under the expert control of Bob with our visitors from Portwood (7 beers on tap at any one time I'm informed) contributing fully to a very enjoyable evening.  Our first experience of 'Thursday night, Channel 5' type WIST competitions - and no, that's not where it is anymore but it keeps our unsettling mimicry of United going.  The sauna of the front room at the Griffin was for once welcome, given the seasonally appropriate conditions outside.  It's just unfortunate that it will be like that in May as well.

Back to the league next week in the Red v the Historymen who monstered us in the same fixture, at the same stage last season .

Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio....?"

The Printers lost to The Electric Pigs.

HMRUFC lost to Compulsory Mantis Shrimp who notched up their first 'European' victory without a cruising Rachael.  James sends this summary....

"It was a momentous occasion as CMS played their first ever European match, against HMRUFC.  Unfortunately our captain, Rachael, couldn't make it as she is currently on a cruise around Norway.  We moved into a 9-point lead after round 1, which doesn't do justice to how close the scores were for much of it.  Rounds 2, 3 and 4 were also closely contested, with HMRUFC narrowing our lead to 6 points.  Fortunately for us we extended that lead to 11 points after round 5 and were thus able to relax in the final round.  Overall, the night was fun, interesting and, dare I say it, convivial.  Our opponents were a pleasure to quiz against, and we all agreed that we thoroughly enjoyed the Stockport-style rounds."

The Prodigals beat The Tiviot at the Albert Club.  Prodigal Michael sends this summary....

"An inevitably convivial evening at the Albert saw the Prodigals take and then maintain an early lead.  There were potentially momentous items of note: (1) Jimmy's brother Nick, at the age of 70, became surely the oldest debutant in WithQuiz history; (2) The Prodigals fielded a team without a Glennon or Bassett.  When did that last happen?  And many thanks to History Man Ivor for QM-img so gracefully and adeptly!"

The Paper

This week the paper was set by The Stockport League.  Aggregate scores were quite respectable by the standards of these WIST papers and there seem to be no complaints from around the grounds.

Specific feedback include this from Kieran....

"We loved the question about the disappearing  hijacker - how did he do that?  It was a paper with lots of points available and little controversy although we did think our guests got the rough end of some pairs."

....and this from James....

"A good quiz, well compiled."

....and this from Mike Wagstaffe....

"The paper was well done and there were few unanswerables in either of the formats.  We liked the WWII Operations round, even though we didn't twig the theme until Q7, but round-of-the-night was undoubtedly 'three consecutive letters'.  Any round featuring the living legend PabZab is always going to get our approval and 'D. B. Cooper' is a shoo-in for QOTW."

Question of the Week

This week the Dunkers vote for Round 5 Question 7:

D B Cooper is an epithet used by the media for an unknown character who, in 1971 between Portland and Seattle in the US, perpetrated which celebrated crime?
