WIST Champions Cup Final:  The Alexandra lost to Dunkin' Dönitz

WIST Lowly Grail Final:  The Bards lost to The Printers

WIST Champions Cup Final:

The Alexandra lost to Dunkin' Dönitz amidst the Victorian splendour of the Alexandra pub in Edgeley.  I was on hand as a spectator and thoroughly enjoyed watching the best brains of Stockport and South Manchester slugging it out.  Once again the magic of the Dunkers' conferences gave them the edge.  Time and again they go into a huddle with not one of them any idea of the answer and then emerge a minute later having reached the correct conclusion.  How do they do it?

Perhaps Kieran can tell us....

"WIST has been kind to us this season with its venues.  The unforgettable Travellers Call back in November and tonight the Alexandra in Edgeley.  A proper pub, only a few minutes walk away for Martin and me (which is a big point in its favour) with decent beer, four or five rooms each with a different feel, one of them even boasting a fully functioning integral parrot.  It's a bit too far off the WithQuiz circuit to become our new home but there's two Donutz who would be very happy to relocate there from the start of next season.

The Alexandra are old friends - it doesn't seem right to call them opponents.  Tonight's match was a repeat of the 2010 final and the result was exactly the same, a Dunkers win by 9 points.  Each team had added 10 to its total score in the intervening 8 years, however, which says something confusing about the ageing process.

After last week's nail biting title decider this was a much more straightforward affair, at least from our standpoint.  We won the first half Stockport format by 7, and more or less stayed even in the Withington second half.

The Alexandra were splendid hosts and of course we congratulated Mike Wagstaffe once more on his paper for last week's final league matches.  Well we're a bit biased as far as that goes!

So we're double winners once more and this was our 30th major trophy in 26 or 27 seasons (not exactly sure how many) competing.  Dementia still seems to be being kept at bay so we'll be back for more come the autumn.  And I got through the whole season without the blurt I've been fearing since our first match against the Albert at the beginning of October.

Oh there's the cup starting next week.  Still time then."

From the home team Mike W sends these words....

"We knew that to have even the slightest chance of beating the Dunkers in our latest European meeting we would need all the stars to be in alignment.  They weren't.  Our opponents won the first (Stockport-style) round by seven and honours were even in the themed written round, meaning we had work to do in the second (WithQuiz format) half.  We were then hit by the DD juggernaut, losing rounds 3 and 4 by an aggregate of 16-6 and it was threatening to become an absolute stuffing.  We actually managed to win the last two rounds to give an air of respectability to the score, but the Dunkers were comfortable winners.  They beat us on two-pointers, one-pointers and steals - to put it another way, they knew quite a few more answers than we did.

Despite getting a hammering the evening was hugely enjoyable.  The game was played in a sporting and light-hearted (I want to say 'convivial') manner and the Donuts were, as ever, engaging company.  They are a formidable team and are worthy winners.  We're already looking forward to next season's competition."

WIST Lowly Grail Final:

The Bards of Didsbury lost to The Printers who become the first Stockport team to hoist the Lowly Grail (formerly A-Trophy) Cup.  Many congratulations from all in South Manchester.

Regular WithQuiz hacks Ivor and Mike H were on hand to tell the tale.

First Ivor....

"The Bards won two of the three sections tonight but it was the written round that was to bring their downfall.  The Printers spotted the theme whilst the Bards did not - and the round ended up 14-4 in favour of The Printers.  Stockport teams often struggle with the WithQuiz format but The Printers have obviously learned a trick or two from previous games and (like the Dunkers) know when it is better to play safe for a one if a two is an unnecessary  risk.  They are certainly worthy winners having despatched the History Men by 10 points in the quarter finals and the Rugby Club by nine points in the semis.  Perhaps surprisingly they report that they are in the relegation zone of their league."

...and then Mike H....

"Excluding the second 'Stockport-style' round, The Bards won 38-34, but overall they lost the match by 6 points.  The paper had plenty of variety with some good questions - but there weren't many twos to be had.  In the 'WithQuiz-style' rounds there were 7, of which 4 went to The Bards and in the 'Stockport-style' Round One there were 15, of which eight went to Bards.  So, though tough, the paper was well-balanced.

Quiz Paper Verdict

This week the paper was set by The WithQuiz League (Greg Spiller)

The average aggregate was 99.5

A well-crafted paper that seemed to me a suitable examination for the 4 teams contesting these finals.

In the Alex v Dunkers match (which I watched) there were very few that went unanswered and plenty that yielded a reward after some inspired conferences.  It wasn't a quick paper to negotiate (nor an easy one for the QM who had quite a few pronunciation challenges) but it did give much entertainment.

From the victors' table Kieran sort of agrees with me....

"There was only one unanswered question on the Withington format.  I didn't keep the details for the first half but the aggregate score of 109 suggests not very many points went begging.  So congratulations to Ethel's Greg for a paper well worthy of a WIST final.  We particularly liked the Avogadro's number unofficial holiday.  Scientists, they're a laugh a parsec aren't they?"

From the other match Ivor offers these views of the paper....

"It was agreed that Greg had set an excellent quiz; just the right level of difficulty and much to interest and entertain.  Setting 'Stockport-style' pairs it is especially tricky to get the balance right, and not to signpost the second question of the pair.  As an observer my favourite round was the Dundee comic classic characters - old quizzers always relish a trip down memory lane.  Young people think our childhood world was pictured in black and white but it wasn’t (though our TVs were).  Dennis, Figaro, Pansy Potter and Little Plum were black and red.  Happy days."

Mike W and his colleagues on the Alex team also had some kind words on Greg's paper....

"Greg did a great job with the paper - lots of interesting questions, packed with additional clues and some good themes.  There were only four unanswered questions throughout, although the 'Run Run' question may have taken things to a hitherto unknown level of unanswerableness!  We would have preferred to go first rather than second in Round 1, but only because we happened to know more of those answers - there was no discernible imbalance in difficulty.  The Cluedo theme worked well and both teams scored well in the WithQuiz rounds.  A paper worthy of the final - thanks Greg."

....and the Dave Barras Question of the Week award this week has been nominated by Dunkin' Donitz and goes to Round 3 Question 5:

Based on the American style of writing dates, which unofficial annual holiday is celebrated by scientists between 2 minutes past 6 in the morning and 2 minutes past 6 in the evening on October 23rd?
