A comfortable victory for the Bards sees them retain the Cup

Tony looks happy...

It was a good toss to win and an even better decision by us to go first.  The Bards enjoyed a decisive victory.

After winning the first round 7-3 we increased our lead to 15-4 then to 20-6.  By Round 5 we were leading 30-10.  The Opsis were in a considerable state of shock to the extent that they could hardly credit winning the last round convincingly 7 points to 3.  They were only too pleased to agree with our nomination of Round 8 as easily the best round of the night.

By the close we had scored 9 twos, 20 'confers' and nicked 9 'steals'.  In contrast the  Opsis scored 5 twos, 14 'confers' and no steals.  Mike, who QM'ed, did not find the paper easy to present for whatever reason (I didn't look at the question paper later to discover what the difficulty might have been).

By the time we had finished we were the only people in the pub and so we await tomorrow's announcements to discover who the winners of the Plate might be.

The Opsis were gallant losers and did not moan about the balance in the paper - but that doesn't prevent us from doing it on their behalf.  In the event the Bards have won the Val Draper Trophy two years running and now have the pleasure of getting it engraved.

Last night we also had the pleasure of buying the winner's round of drinks for the losers before Round 8 had even started.  The Opsis thanked us by winning that round 7-3.

That's Leigh going Labour next time then

Howell looks a little peeved but mainly philosophical...

Not a great night's quizzing!!

We lost the toss and went second (I would be interested to see who went second in the Plate).

At 8-25 at half time, it rather felt that the questions favoured the team going first in the first half - as an example, we lost Round 2 by 8 points to 1 (no unanswered questions) but would have probably been 4-5, 5-5 or 5-6 if we'd being answering first.  We were 10-30 down after 5 rounds then scored 15 against the Bards' 17 in the final 3 rounds so it was a case of too little too late for us.

We do need to get some better discipline into our ranks when it comes to keeping quiet when people are considering whether or not to go for a two.  We were yap, yap, yap tonight.

It was a very long drawn out evening generally, with loads of repeating of questions, confusion as to the score, doubts about where we were up to in the paper, questions being asked out of order, etc.  At the end of Round 7, it was so late that Brian made the opposition buy us the winners drinks!!

Having said all that the Opsis were definitely not on good form.  Even if I had done a bit better we would have still lost by 15-20 points.  On the other hand, the Bards were pretty good. Their 2 newer players (one of whom I had not seen before) both performed pretty well.  They won just 9-5 on twos and it was 3-3 on unanswered questions but the steals went 9-0 in their favour!!

Finally QM Mike chips in...

Another very long, difficult, very late quiz with a heavy defeat for the Opsis at the close (Brian thought they had never lost by so much).  By the end no-one wanted to choose the top three rounds preferring just to name the last round as the best.
An apology from me: By the time we reached Round 5 I was so tired I got the questions and scores in a muddle.  Brian told me there was no need for the QM to keep the scores - but that is something I always like to do.

Having said all this QMing is something I much enjoy, and last night's teams are two of my favourites.

WithQuiz Plate Final

Albert beat Charabancs

Albert win their first trophy since the WIST Champions Cup in 2020

Manager Mike reports ...

Ah, a Trophy!

We spent days practising running up and down the steps to receive the Plate from our Royal visitor who will have taken time off from his Court case to attend our humble gathering.

I QMed and can report that the Charas were fair-minded, polite and played the match in the right spirit whilst the Albert were....well, the Albert.

Quiz paper set by...

...'Knocked Out United'

Average Aggregate score 77.5

Well, the aggregate score over the two matches was pretty much in line with the season's average, although the balance of the easiness of the questions seems (at least from the Bards/Opsis match) to have been definitely skewed in favour of the team going first.

I was not one of the players this week (although I did act as 'Paper Compiler' for the 'Knocked Out United' teams).  Instead I was at the Etihad where my joy was undivided watching 'City tearing Cockneys apart - again'.  So I must leave all detailed observations on the quality of the paper to the four finalists.

This was Mike O'B's view...

As the score suggests for the most part the paper was accessible although it was felt that some questions e.g. the Sydney question were virtually ungettable.  However, given the brief time allowed for the creation of the paper, this was a very creditable effort.

Question of the Week

This week I've selected what, to me, seemed the best question from KFD's winning Hidden theme round connecting references from Jerusalem, namely Round 8 Question 2 ...

Which author’s 80th birthday was marked by a special edition of St Edmund’s Ale?  The brewery had been founded by his great-grandfather in 1799.

For the answer to this and all the week's other questions click here.

'KO United' Round of the Finals

Additionally this week we've asked the four finalist teams to choose which of the rounds they liked the best (a bottle of wine at the End of Season evening is on offer for the setters).

The preference was clearly for Round 8 set by KFD.  This was the Hidden Theme round in which KFD had buried keywords from Blake's poem that we all know as Jerusalem (though KFD assured us that that was not the name Blake gave it) in the answers.

Honourable mentions too from our finalists for the Prodigals' Picture Round 3 and the Pigs' Tram Stop Round 7.

Well done KFD!  Your wine awaits your collection in a fortnight's time.

Well, you've got to do something waiting for a bloody Northern Rail train to turn up!

(R6/Q8)

...and also...

Next week for the WIST Champions Final (Prodigals v Albert) and the Lowly Grail Final (History Men v Opsimaths) the paper has been set by The Railway team from the Stockport League.  Mike Wagstaffe assures me that the envelopes containing the paper will be left next Wednesday - as usual - behind the bar in the Fletcher Moss.
