A victorious Stockport team hang on to that Cup for yet another year

Stockport win the Pre-season Inter League match with a 7-point margin

For the third year in a row Stockport take the honours

Mike watches on from the QM's chair

Autumn leaves, a nip in the air, a dark cavernous ill-lit chamber at the Parrswood ringed by rather artful photos of long-gone Mancunian heroes ... yes, it's quiz time again.

A goodly crowd gathered to welcome some old friends from Stockport.  Plenty of our players turned up such that we could substitute 3 WithQuizzers at half time and still lose convincingly!  Traditionally WithQuiz do well on the Stockport-style rounds and Stockport flourish on the WithQuiz-style rounds; this year it was the Stockport rounds that did for us with scores on the later WithQuiz rounds pretty even between the two teams.

On the upside it was great to welcome two new WithQuizzers to the fray: Tehmeena and Michael who we look forward to seeing around the grounds as the season progresses.

Average Aggregate score 117.0

This year's aggregate score was higher than that for last year's equivalent fixture - so the paper was somewhat more accessible but there were plenty of taxing moments for the quizzers.  From the QM chair it was like watching an old threshing machine that had been stored away for a while gradually cranking and grinding into action as power was fed through its cogs and wheels.  At the start the quizzers were finding it hard to get into gear; by the end the trivia was flowing smoothly.

Round 5, the movie poster picture round seemed to be enjoyed with every picture being answered successfully and the determining factor whether or not the competitor conferred or risked it on their own for 2 points.

Question of the Week

This week I've picked one from the Blockbuster Bingo Round (Round 3).  It was Question 2 whose answer starts with the letter 'B' ...

Since the 2024 General Election which is the only team out of the 92 English Football League clubs to have its home ground represented by a Conservative MP?

For the answer to this and all the week's other questions click here.

...and also

Just over a week ago I had the pleasure of interviewing WithQuiz Prodigal and University Challenge Questions Producer, Richard Gilbert, on the radio (ALL FM).  Richard was an excellent and lively interviewee with some fascinating choices of music.  If you want to 'listen back' to the show here's a link: 24th September 2024 Programme - Interview Richard Gilbert about University Challenge by Vintage FM - Don & Mike | Mixcloud

... and so on to the real stuff ...

WithQuiz league matches start next Wednesday (October 9th) with a paper set by The History Men.

Good luck one and all for the coming season.  See you soon.

Wearing your heart on your guitar

(R2/Q8)

We gathered on the morning of September 29th to say goodbye to Nick.  There were friends from all over the quizzing world of which Nick was such a notable member - and of course a number of WithQuiz friends.

There were warm words from all quarters and a loving eulogy from his younger brother.

A particular feature of the service was the message in hieroglyphs shown inscribed on the base of Nick's coffin (see below).  There was also a hieroglyph message at the foot of the service card as you can see on the left.

The hieroglyphs on the funeral card we were told translate to the moving epitaph:

"He has been united with the gods"

... and so it was.

Rest in peace, Nick.
