Welcome to WithQuiz 47!

The Fixtures are up on the site - we start on October 2nd with the Pre-season friendly followed by the first round of league matches on Wednesday October 8th

"Same old, same old" would be a good way to describe the 2025/26 season as we get underway.  No new teams; no drop outs; same venues and team captains.  Just one change to team names ...

Predictably KFD have changed their handle.  Henceforth they're to be known as ...

Советские космические собаки.  

Apparently it means 'Soviet Space Dogs' (no, I've no idea) and to accompany this change there's a picture of Russian astromutts, Belka and Strelka, below which becomes the new team logo.

Thankfully Kieran has given permission for us to call them CKC which is the name adopted throughout this site.

Our WithQuiz WhatsApp group now has 20 members and is becoming used and useful (especially to me).  If you wish to join it then just let me know by text or email giving your mobile number.

The first match of the new season will be the traditional inter-league friendly between representative teams from WithQuiz and the Stockport League played at the Parrswood Hotel on Thursday October 2nd starting at 8.30.  It's 6-a-side and everybody who turns up will be guaranteed at least half a match on the WithQuiz team.  The paper format is as for WIST cup matches, i.e. a mash-up of the formats used by the 2 leagues.  At present Stockport have held the trophy for this match for the past 3 seasons so we want it back!

Do please put this in your diary and come along - its a great way to kick off the season. 

WithQuiz league matches start the following Wednesday on October 8th with the Opsimaths setting.

The structure of the fixtures programme is much as last season.  The only significant change is that I've reduced the Christmas break to 2 weeks and put an extra 'Free' week in early in 2026.  Hopefully football fans will find 'Free' weeks coincide with important home matches.  Many thanks again to Roddy for working out the fixtures for each week; they would have been published a little earlier if I hadn't lost Roddy's email in my voluminous inbox.  Sorry!

This year WithQuiz is responsible for setting the WIST papers so I'll be looking for a setter from amongst the non-WIST Cup teams (i.e. teams that finished last season outside the top 4 in the table) for setting the paper to be used on December 4th.

As you know a lot of effort goes into producing a fresh Home page for the website each week, with reports and sideways comments on the matches and week's question paper.  Compiling this has become my winter labour of love each Wednesday night/Thursday morning.  Your match reports are the grist to my mill so do please keep them coming.  It's helpful to have your reports by 11am on Thursday at the latest.  Many thanks in advance.

I always keep a careful watch on the TV quiz shows to see if any WithQuizzers have been on air. This close season I'm delighted to have watched quizzing friends on Only  Connect on consecutive weeks: James Haughton from former WithQuiz team Compulsory Mantis Shrimp captained the 5KS team on August 11th and the following week Opsimaths' own queen bee Charlotte Orland-Jackson captained the Worker Bees.  Only Connect airs at 8pm each Monday on BBC2 and both programmes are easily found on iPlayer.  Both James' and Charlotte's teams will be back later in the Only Connect season.

Finally ... though we have a very similar structure to last season and have no new teams, we have had plenty of new faces in our existing squads over the past year or two and this bodes well for the future.  There's life in this old dog yet (though sadly not for CKC's new logo it seems).
