End of Season Friendly Quiz

Winners: Bards

Runners Up: Ethel Rodin

Third place: KFD

A great evening to round off the 2022/23 WithQuiz campaign as our teams gathered en masse at the Albert Club.

The usually rowdy Chorlton cyclists had been relegated to the Snooker room leaving us a free run of the main lounge.  Perhaps the rainy weather outside played a part but for once the quizzers outrowdied the soggy cyclists.

Tony's Bards retain the Val Draper Cup...

We were delighted that Cathy Whitehead, daughter of our founder the late Barry Whitehead, had agreed to be Guest of Honour.  Cathy is no mean quizzer herself but her main duty this time was to dish out the prizes.  The QM seat for the evening was occupied by Ashton who had also set the questions; Brian computed the Question of the Season votes in double quick time halfway through the evening; Howell was our official photographer for the evening; and I was Mike on the mike whenever an MC was needed.

With fond memories of your Dad, thanks Cathy for being our Guest of Honour

The Barry Whitehead WithQuiz League Shield returns to the Griffin with KFD

When it came to the awards the 'international' team cups this season were wholly the domain of WithQuiz teams (although the Stockport league did win the friendly pre-season match): the WIST trophy went to Albert and the Lowly Grail to The History Man.

This lot look as happy as Pigs in ...

On the home front KFD earned some wine for their Best Round of the 'KO United' paper (the 'Words from Jerusalem' Hidden theme round), Albert took the WithQuiz Plate, the Bards retained the Val Draper Cup and the renamed Barry Whitehead WithQuiz League Shield, recognising the pinnacle of WithQuiz achievement, went to KFD.

Photographic evidence of all this can be seen here.

A pair of happy-go-lucky Charas

As is the tradition at these End of Season events the teams present took part in a vote for their favourite 'Question of the Season' from amongst the 26 'Questions of the Week' nominated throughout the season.  Ethel Rodin (well, Greg actually) beat Albert into second place with The History Men coming third.  All is revealed in the table below.

Finally in the evening's quiz set by Ashton The Bards triumphed beating Ethel into second place by 3 points.  KFD came third a couple of points further behind.

The evening ended with an exhortation for WithQuizzers to spend the summer finding more teams to join us when we gather again in late September.

QM & MC at evening's end

Having said this we must remember never to take ourselves too seriously, and so my idea that a motto for our pastime could well be taken from a 1976 episode of Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads, seemed to meet with general approval.  When chatting rather morosely one day Bob asked Terry what he would like to have engraved on his tombstone.  Terry mulled over the question for a short while and came back with the answer: "None the bloody wiser!"

À bientôt - see you in the autumn.

"None the Bloody Wiser"
